More on AirPort 3.1 and non-AirPort Cards
Darn those nit-picking product numbers! Alert reader Dale Rice pointed out that Buffalo Technology actually sells two 802.11g PC Cards: the $60 WLI-CB-G54 card is not actually compatible with AirPort 3.1, whereas the $80 WLI-CB-G54A is compatible. Make sure you get the right one!
Dale also noted that he'd seen reports of AirPort 3.1 working with a Belkin 802.11g PC Card. More interesting, for those people who would like to connect a Power Mac to an AirPort Extreme networking, are anecdotal reports of 802.11g PCI cards from Buffalo Technology and Linksys (the Linksys WMP54G PCI adapter) working with AirPort 3.1. The moral of the story would seem to be that compatibility is broad, but check for specific compatibility claims or at least user reports before buying.

I am using the Belkin 802.11g card, I think they only do one, and it works like a charm with Airport 3.1. Bought it after some said it would work, and gave me feedback it was sure.
Works like a charm!

Linksys WMP54G PCI adapter works with Airport 3.1. I've been using it since the update was posted. I'm using it with the Linksys WRT54G. Powerbook TI and G3/500 Pismo both work. Thanks Apple.

So you don't have to remove the old Airport card if you wanted to upgrade to 802.11g?

You could have two cards, I think. I'm not sure how the software would react under Mac OS X. It can support multiple interfaces, but I don't know how you would choose the network. It won't hurt anything to try.

I tried the Belkin 802.11g card on a powerbook g3 bronze with airport 3.1 and had no luck. The airport software did not recognize the card and the Belkin site had no info for Mac users while the tech service reps said the card was not Mac compatible. I returned the card and have been looking for a working replacement. What about Proxim's Orinoco?

Once you insert an 802.11g card, the internal AIrport module is disabled completely until the next reboot. You can't use both at once.

I have both the Airport card installed and the linksys card installed. No conflict noticed. Areas with B only , I used the internal card at Home I used only G. Change it only via system preferences. Works great!

Has anyone actually tried the Buffalo g54 (not the g54a) card under OS X?

Never mind. I just got the Buffalo g54, and it works well under 10.2.6.

I have a Linksys WMP54G installed in a Win 2K based PC that worked perfectly in my MAC Airport Extreme network with airport version 3.0.4 and using WEP128.
However, when I upgraded to airport 3.1, I could not get it to work. Tried deleting everything and starting all over and I had the same results. The only thing that worked with WEP128 was to revert back to 3.0.4, which worked instantly, automatically. Oh, by the way, the WMP54G works with Airport 3.1 when WEP is disabled.
It appears there is an incompatibility issue with either airport 3.1 or the Linksys drivers. Possibily LinkSys wmp54G needs a flash upgrade to be fully compliant with 802.11g..

Have been using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop with Buffalo WLI-CB-G54 PC card with both Airport Snow and Airport Extreme base stations successfully since January with encryption until yesterday. Awaiting Buffalo tech support response (escalated to 48 hour response from Sr tech) to replace the card. I know it failed since we popped in a Linksys WPC54G cardbus card which works, but with a little less range. (same environmental conditions.
My son (away at school) is trying to figure how to have his Toshiba laptop (same setup Buffalo card) connect and dial through the Airport Snow on Dial-up (all he has at the moment) Anyone who has had success with this, please e-mail me or post. He has the windows version of the Airport utility from Apple. He is getting frustrated. He also has a G3 (with Sonnet G4 500 card installed) that he is trying to also connect through ethernet but may have to opt for a PCI card 54G set-up (possibly Buffalo).
At home we have an Airport Xtreme working successfully on DSL (encrypted) with PC's and 3 other Mac's all co-existing, between SBC drops.

I recently found, at Fry's Electronics, the Airlink 802.11g cards. They say "Broadcom" chipset right on the box. $59.00, and they work like a champ! (I found the range to be a little shorter then the Linksys, but better than my internal AirPort card.)

I am trying to get my 15" TiBook (and it's Airport Extreme card) to work with my Linksys WRT54G Access Point. Airport sees it, but none of the password stuff works (I've tried WEP-128 Hex, etc.) Oh, and the signal strength (thanks to MacStumbler) is pretty crappy too (at 20' or so). Does anyone have any advice?

I've just signed up for ADSL service with an NTT line in Tokyo. I have a powerbook G3 with OS9.2 and have found I have no airport card (airport 1.3). What will work with my system to get connected?
Posted by: willy | August 19, 2003 08:23 PM
For PowerBook users running OS9, almost any Orinocco/WaveLAN card will be seen as an "Airport" card. Unfortunately, in OS X the card is not recognized, so you have to run a third party app to use it for networking. Even with those new drivers, you cannot scan for open networks. That means you better write down those networks you plan on joining because you are going to have to name them explicitly if you switch wireless networks.
I just bought the Buffalo G54A card and it is working flawlessly in OS X (I can scan for networks now -yay!). Let's see how many networks I can get into in Osaka tomorrow....

The Sceptre 802.11g PC Card will not work with OS X. It's cheap, but don't waste your time or money.
Is there a semi-authoritative list of compatible 802.11g PC Cards that work with OS X?

I have a problem with connecting my new Toshiba Satellite raptop to my wireless network which is created with Airport Extreme Base Station. When I disabled WEP on Airport, my Toshiba start connect to the network but when I turn WEP back to the airport, it stop connecting. I tried to use Hexadesimal instead of ASCII to Toshiba but it does not work. Does anybody know how can I make this thing work?

I try to make a PC Windows XP Pro computer connected to an Airport Extreme 3.3 network with a Linksys WMP54G PCI Adapter.
When WEP encryption is off everything is OK (sharing, internet, etc.) But when I turn encryption On 40 or 128 bit, the Pc ask me for the Wep key (there is always 8 dots apperaing in the box). I enter the network wep key (13 letters) but I have the "wireless connection unavailable". I have downloaded the latest driver for the WMP54G (3.20.23) but the problem persists. Any help will be appreciated.

I had bought the latest Wireless Router from Linksys, Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G). I am connected to the SCV Broadband. Currently I have a first generation iBook (Handbag looking model) and a G3 (Blue Tower). I would like to connect it wirelessly with the WRT54G. Pls advise what are the cards that I should use to get it connected. Both system is still running OS 8.5 or OS 9.

Does it really have any compatibility issue with any Linksys card (specifically wpc55ag) using WinXP??? We have already selected Hexa characters from the airport, still it is looping back (would still say unavaialable after trying to connect to it). There's even no option for 64bit Hexa characters just 128bit. And sometimes XP's Wireless Zero Config do have some problem with the 128bit encyption.

Hi, may i ask a question?
I have bought a pair of Buffalo 11g product, i.e. WBR-G54 and WLI-CB-G54.
When i insert the cardbus WLAN card, the cardbus icon displayed on the right top of the finder shows implicitly 802.11b even if i configure the airstation to '802.11g only' state. After my simple test, i make a FTP connection to another PC via my TiBook with this cardbus WLAN card. The data rate is only 50 kByte/sec. However, in the another test, the speed of the FTP connection between two PCs becomes 1000kByte/sec. Can anyone help me to overcome this problem?

For Bob Nobis,
I played around with a Linksys WPC54G on a XP laptop and it would not work using 128-bit WEP using the linksys software (with AEBS). Using the XP wireless network connection properties, with Network Authentication set to SHARED, everything worked fine using 128-bit WEP.
